Customizing Outlook MSG Viewer to your needs.

  • Start customizing Outlook MSG Viewer by double-clicking the application in your Applications folder. Once the program starts, click Preferences to access these options below. You will need to restart your mail client to see any changes.
  • Configuring different email clients or address books
Prefer to use Microsoft Outlook for Mac or Mozilla Thunderbird for your email needs? No problem. Outlook MSG Viewer works with all your favorite email clients. Below is a list of compatible email programs and the codes needed to activate them in Outlook MSG Viewer. Just type in the corresponding code in the dialog box, and you'll be up and running in no time.

    Email Client: Code

    Apple Mail:
    Apple Address Book:
    Microsoft Entourage:
    Microsoft Outlook for Mac:
    Mozilla Thunderbird: org.mozilla.thunderbird
    Postbox: com.postbox-inc.postbox
None: Leave code area blank. With this setting, no email client will be launched after the conversion is complete (v2.0 or later only).

  • Display RTF as inline HTML
Outlook MSG files are encoded in the Microsoft RTF format, whereas standard emails use the HTML format. To preserve the original integrity of the MSG file, RTF attachments are displayed. With inline HTML displaying of RTFs, you can take the speed of Outlook MSG Viewer one step further. This feature enables you to view RTFs directly in the original email – without having to open a separate file. In the conversion from RTF to HTML some minor formatting may be lost, but the original text will be preserved.
  • Display attachments as inline
Designed for those with extra time constraints, this feature uses HTML to display your attachments inside of your email. Our power users find this feature indispensable, because it alleviates the need to open multiple attachments and programs per email. Again, just like displaying RTFs in HTML, some minor formatting may be lost, but the original text will be preserved.
  • Name .msg.eml files as .eml, or .msg.vcf files as .vcf
When you convert files with Outlook MSG Viewer, the files are automatically renamed by adding ".eml" as a suffix to the original file name. For example, if you are converting an MSG file named "businessproposal.msg", the file will be renamed to "businessproposal.msg.eml". This helps you better identify your files.

Please note that when conversions happen, files with the same exact file name will automatically be overwritten – without any notification. For this reason, it is recommended that you leave this option disabled.

However, if you prefer to use the ".eml" suffix without the ".msg", then enable this preference. This will change your newly converted files from "businessproposal.msg" to "businessproposal.eml" or to ".vcf" depending on the original file format.
  • Use CRC32 to enhance speed for previously converted files
This feature provides power users with an extra dose of speed. When live, it enables the CRC32 checking of each MSG file. This fancy terminology really means that Outlook MSG Viewer automatically checks to see if each file has been converted – saving you time by not re-converting the same emails again.

If you wish to re-process MSG files (for instance, if you changed a preference), we recommend you leave this option disabled. This is because CRC32 only checks to see if the MSG file was already processed, and not the preferences that were enabled when it was processed.
  • Suppress attachments when converting vCards
When converting vCards there may be additional files attached to the MSG file in addition to the .vcf address card (like photos or PDFs). Outlook MSG Viewer automatically saves these extra files by default. To easily access these files, save the MSG file to your Desktop or another preferred folder before converting. This will ensure that the extra files are easily accessible.

However, when this feature is enabled, Outlook MSG Viewer will disregard any additional files that may be attached to a vCard. This option does not alter any of the original text from the vCard file – it only suppresses extraneous attached files.

Common Usage Problems

  • Outlook MSG Viewer can't be opened – unidentified developer
This is a Mac security feature in OS X 10.8+ for Applications that have not been downloaded from the Mac store.

Solution: From the Applications folder, right-click on the Outlook MSG Viewer application and choose Open. You may be prompted with a standard security warning. This step only needs to be performed once to authorize the software.
  • How do I use the program to open MSG files?
Outlook MSG Viewer is designed to be completely seamless. Therefore, the only time you need to launch the application directly is to customize preferences. MSG files are not opened by launching the Outlook MSG Viewer application itself... that would be an extra step!

Once Outlook MSG Viewer is properly installed in the Applications folder, simply double-click on any MSG file of your choosing (or, right-click and choose Open With → Outlook MSG Viewer). Outlook MSG Viewer will quietly launch in the background, convert your MSG file, and then display the converted file in your favorite Mac email client.
  • I paid for the software. How do I download it? Where is my license information?
Your download and license information were automatically emailed to the address that you ordered Outlook MSG Viewer with. This may not be the same email as your PayPal or Google Wallet account, so you may want to check to see if it was sent there.

Pro tip: The order confirmation email can take up to 10 minutes to arrive depending on your internet provider. Please make sure you are checking the email account that you ordered Outlook MSG Viewer with, and check your spam/junk folders as well. If your email hasn't arrived after 10 minutes, please contact us and we'll be glad to help.
  • I am prompted to enter my license information repeatedly
We know registering for software can be a pain – but it's a necessary evil. Once you receive your purchase confirmation email (see question above), you'll have all the information you need to register your product.
However, if your license information doesn't seem to be working, try one of these common solutions:

    • In the first box, type your full name (as specified in the order confirmation email, including capitalization)
    • In the second box, type your license number (including hyphen)
    • Include the multi-user information, such as text like "(2-pack)" as part of your user name

  • Apple Mail launches and asks me to create a new account
Once a successful MSG conversion takes place, Outlook MSG Viewer needs a working mail program on your Mac in order to open the converted EML file. By default, the built-in Mail program is used. If you haven't used this software previously, you may be prompted to set it up.

You can also try right-clicking on the converted EML file and selecting a different Mail client by using Open With →. Or, try right-clicking on the file and choosing Quick Look, which will display the EML file natively. You can customize your Outlook MSG Viewer preferences (see above) to set up your preferred default mail program.
  • Double-clicking MSG files isn't working properly
If double-clicking MSG files produces an error message, but right-clicking on an MSG file and choosing "Open With → Outlook MSG Viewer" does work, then this is a simple fix. In this case, Outlook MSG Viewer is not configured to be the default application when opening MSG files.

You can get around this issue by right-clicking on an MSG file and choosing "Open With → Outlook MSG Viewer". Or, if you find that this is a persistent problem, please visit this link to easily change the default file associations on your Mac.

Pro tip: If this doesn't work, you may need to reboot your computer, empty the recycling bin, or repair disk permissions for the file association to take place. Please also confirm that your default mail program is set up correctly in the "Customizing Outlook MSG Viewer" section above. It is possible that the MSG file is converting properly, but a working email client has not been properly configured.
  • Why is there a "Mail Attachment.rtf" file in the converted email?
This is the expected behavior. For additional information, see Display RTF as inline HTML under Customizing Outlook MSG Viewer above.
  • Cannot write file error
In order for Outlook MSG Viewer to work its magic, the folder containing the MSG files must be "writable." This "cannot write file error" is common when trying to process files from a "read-only" source like a CD or read-only folders.

Try copying the MSG files to a folder with write-permissions, such as your Desktop, and try the conversion again. The folder needs to have read & write privileges, see this Mac support article for additional information on how to set permissions.
  • How do I import the converted EML files back into my email client?
If you've decided to run Outlook MSG Viewer to convert a batch of MSG files, you may wish to import the converted EML files back into your mail client for ease. Please consult your email client's documentation for help. For instance, in Apple Mail, you can use the "File → Import Mailboxes..." command, selecting the "Apple Mail" option as your source for importing data.
  • Bulk MSG file conversion issues
Processing multiple MSG files is easy with Outlook MSG Viewer. First select all of the MSG files you want to convert, and drag them right onto the Outlook MSG Viewer app (or right-click and choose Open With → Outlook MSG Viewer). This will automatically start processing your MSG files into the proper format.

Also, when Outlook MSG Viewer is batch-processing, your email client will not be automatically launched – this is to prevent overloading your email software. Once the conversion is complete, files are saved in the same folder where they were originally located.

Pro tip: All files must have the MSG file type to be processed in bulk. If you have included other file types in your selection, you will not see the option to Open With → Outlook MSG Viewer.
  • Can't open winmail.dat file
Like MSG files, winmail.dat files can be problematic for Mac users, because they are often used as attachments, and they are also not easily opened by Mac email software.

The current version of Outlook MSG Viewer does not decode Winmail.dat files, but we are considering adding this feature in the future. In the meantime, if you're looking for software to decode the winmail.dat format, try TNEF's Enough winmail.dat file opener. It's free to use, and it works seamlessly with Outlook MSG Viewer.
  • The program just bounces in the Dock, then quits
Have you tried our sample MSG file? If you can open the sample file, but your MSG file still won't open, please email us at Make sure you attach a copy of your MSG file for our team to look at.
  • The variable serial_chk is not defined
The program launches with a "The variable serial_chk is not defined" error message.

Solution: The application was not installed properly. Delete the Outlook MSG Viewer app from the Applications folder, and reinstall from the disk image.
